Lighting Controls Association's Education Express Scores High Marks from Students
In June 2006, the Lighting Controls Association published Education Express, a new free online distance-education program about lighting, controls and controllable ballasts.
Education Express, authored by lighting industry consultant and educator Craig DiLouie and residing at the Association’s website www.aboutlightingcontrols.org, provides in-depth education about lighting controls and controllable ballast technology, application, system design and commissioning. Education Express consists of four courses—EE101: Introduction to Lighting Control, EE102: Switching Control, EE103: Fluorescent Dimming, and EE201: Daylight Harvesting. Each course in turn consists of learning modules that conclude with an optional online comprehension test that is automatically graded.
Education Express learning modules are currently registered for CEUs recognized by the AEE for its Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional (CLEP) certification program; LEUs recognized by NCQLP for its Lighting Certified (LC) certification program; and NALMCO Education Points recognized by NALMCO for its Certified Lighting Management Consultant (CLMC) certification program. Education Express was recently integrated into NAED's online Learning Center.
In 2007, three new courses will be added: EE202: Lighting & Energy Codes, EE203: Lighting & LEED-NC and EE204: Wireless Controls. EE203: Lighting & LEED-NC is slated for publication at the Lighting Controls Association website in the spring of 2007.
To date, the more than 2,000 students who have taken Education Express courses are giving the program high marks. After students take a learning module, they are invited to evaluate that module anonymously.
To date, 114 students have evaluated Education Express courses, or about 5% of students. These students are broken out about 18% lighting designers, 12% engineers, 11% corporate/government/utility, 8% consultants, 7% electrical contractors, 4% distributors and 3% ESCOs/lighting management companies, with the rest covered by architects, interior designers, manufacturers, manufacturer sales reps, building contractors" and "other."

"Energy codes, legislation and market interest in energy efficiency have increased demand for lighting automation,” says A. J. Glaser , President of the Lighting Controls Association and HUNT Dimming. “One of the biggest barriers to effective adoption of lighting controls, however, has been a lack of knowledge about proper selection, application, design and commissioning. Education Express provides the most comprehensive, detailed education experience about lighting controls and controllable ballasts available on the Web.”
The Lighting Controls Association, headquartered at the NEMA headquarters in Rosslyn , VA , was founded to provide education about lighting energy management and control technology via its web site, which contains Education Express, white papers, articles, research, products, projects and a public forum.
