OSRAM SYLVANIA and Trinity College Help Class of 2011 Start on a Green Note
Light Bulb Donation Could Save 110,000 KWH and $44,000
OSRAM SYLVANIA announced the company’s donation of 400 energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs to Trinity College’s incoming class of 2011. OSRAM SYLVANIA chose Trinity due to their strong environmental position and underscores the lighting leader’s commitment to environmental responsibility and their support of Canada’s future leaders.
This is the first class to enter university since the federal government declared a ban on incandescent bulbs. While the regulations for the minimum efficiency standards will not take place until 2012, OSRAM SYLVANIA and Trinity recognize the importance of educating students early as lighting accounts for approximately 40% of total electricity used on campus. The simple act of replacing an inefficient incandescent light bulb for a more energy-efficient compact fluorescent has a huge impact including saving over $10,000 per year as well as 33,000 kilograms of CO2.
“We were thrilled that Sylvania donated the light bulbs and informative literature to our incoming first year class,” said Joanna Dafoe, Trinity College student and campus environmental leader. “We find the key to engaging students is to target them early with simple and easy ways on how they can positively impact the environment.”
OSRAM SYLVANIA has a long history with the University of Toronto and Trinity in providing them with solutions to keep the campus energy efficient. Most recently, the University of Toronto worked with OSRAM SYLVANIA on a major retrofit of the Robarts Library with the replacement of 18,500 fixtures and 42,000 fluorescent lamps which will save a significant amount of energy, money and maintenance time. A past lighting project at the University of Toronto resulted in an energy savings of 1.8 MW and at least $800,000 per year.
OSRAM SYLVANIA has taken a leadership position in not only creating sustainable lighting products but also taking a sustainable approach to product design, development, manufacturing and distribution. Their Global Care sustainability initiative represents a commitment to social and environmental responsibility and addresses social, economic and environmental needs and includes a 10 percent reduction in company energy use by 2008.
“We are committed to helping educate students on how they can positively impact the environment,” said Abbas Khan, president OSRAM SYLVANIA LTD. “Simple changes can have huge impacts and we want to empower students with the information and tools available to help them make informed choices.”
